Minute inspection

6

Days a week

Fifteen minutes is what one customer reported for his own inspection, not a fixed figure. A harder fault takes longer to find.

Why the same fault costs so differently

Two workshops looked at the same car and quoted two thousand dollars.

The symptom is not the fault

Air that is not cold enough has several possible causes. Which one it is decides whether this is a small repair or a large one.

Guessing favours the expensive answer

One customer went to two workshops before this one. Neither did a serious check, and both concluded the evaporator coil needed changing.

A leak you cannot see is still a leak

Refrigerant does not get used up in a sealed system. If it is low, it is going somewhere, and topping it up without finding where just buys time.

At this workshop that same car got a fifteen minute inspection, a camera into the system, and dye when nothing showed. The customer was told a definitive check had to come before any recommendation. He was not charged for it.

What customers write

The phrase that keeps appearing is no hard selling.

Gotta love this guy - Ah Chong, the most cheerful mechanic you will ever meet. Arrived early morning without appointment - my Macan’s AC system was losing “coldness” and probably due to a gas leak somewhere. Ah Chong did a careful overall check for 15min - including removing passenger seat side panel to access the evaporator coil (where he inserted a line camera for visual check). Since we didn’t detect any visible leak, he pumped some UV liquid into the gas system and told me drive for a few days and come back again. This UV test will help to detect any gas leak in the system visually. Told me they must do a definitive check before recommending any repairs. Not pushy at all. I was impressed with this workshop’s professionalism as I had visited 2 other workshops earlier. The guys at these 2 workshops didn’t come close to doing any serious checks and immediately concluded that I need to change the evaporator coil (quote around $2K). Ah Chong didn’t want to take any inspection fee but I insisted and he accepted a $20 PayNow to his company. Looking forward to getting a conclusive diagnosis.

Mr Loo is friendly and knowledgeable. He quickly found what’s wrong with the aircon in my car. It did require repair but it was only a small leak and he said if I didn’t have time I can come back another day but he had a temporary fix meanwhile. Good efficient experience.

"Attended by Ho, the very helpful staff to check the foul smell, he did the check and concluded no need to do anything and not worth to dismantle n clean the cooling system, recommended to continue monitor since only happened when I start the engine in the morning. Am very impressed by the service n no hard selling like my other experience. Highly recommended and for sure I will be back when necessary txs." ### 4. Honest Reviews Only — **3 stars** — a year ago — ⚠️ DO NOT DISPLAY (Recorded for context. The customer praises the diagnosis and the no-charge policy but reports the workshop could not source a compressor that two other workshops sourced easily.)

A silver car with its entire dashboard removed and the wiring loom exposed, tools laid out on the floor mat

A dashboard out, at the Ubi Road 1 workshop.

Why the diagnosis matters

To reach the evaporator, the dashboard comes out.

That is the job two other workshops recommended to one customer after barely looking at his car. It is hours of work, the whole fascia and the wiring loom disturbed, and it is the right call only when the coil is genuinely the fault.

Which is the entire argument for spending fifteen minutes with a camera first. A leak found elsewhere in the system never becomes this photograph.

How a job goes here

Six things customers wrote down without being asked.

01

Fifteen minutes before an opinion

One customer arrived without an appointment and had a careful overall check that took about fifteen minutes, including removing a side panel to reach the evaporator.

02

A camera, not a guess

A line camera goes into the system for a visual check. What is actually wrong gets seen rather than inferred from how the air feels.

03

No definitive check, no recommendation

When nothing visible turned up, the answer was UV dye and come back in a few days, not a part. The customer wrote that he was told a definitive check had to come first.

04

Sometimes the answer is do nothing

A customer came in about a foul smell and was told it was not worth dismantling the cooling system, just keep monitoring it.

05

You get shown the fault

One customer had the exact leaking area on the cooling coil pointed out and explained before it was replaced.

06

Other workshops send cars here

A customer noticed another workshop delivering its own cars to this one for repair, and said so in his review.

What the workshop does

Car aircon, start to finish.

Diagnosis before anything else
A line camera goes in through the passenger side panel to look at the evaporator coil directly, rather than guessing from symptoms.
UV dye leak testing
When no leak shows on inspection, dye goes into the system and you drive for a few days so the leak reveals itself.
Cooling coil replacement
One customer was shown the exact spot the coil was leaking before any work was agreed.
Gas leak repair
Including small leaks. One customer was offered a temporary fix so he could come back when he actually had time.

These are the jobs customers describe in their own reviews. Call with the symptom and the car model and you will get a straight answer about what is likely involved.

Before you call

The questions people actually ask.

Not necessarily, and topping it up without finding out why it went down just delays the same conversation. Refrigerant does not get used up in a sealed system, so if it is low, something is letting it out. Finding that is the job.

Tell us the symptom and the car.

Not cold enough, a smell in the morning, a noise when the aircon kicks in. That plus the model is usually enough to say what is likely involved.
